![]() ![]() Other favourites, over the years, include The Changeling Sea (1988), Ombria in Shadow (2002), and Solstice Wood (2006.) Most recently, in 2016, I was charmed all over again by Kingfisher and the creation of a world in which Arthurian-style knights drive cars and carry cellphones. And the Riddlemaster series (which includes Heir of Sea and Fire and Harpist in the Wind respectively) was swiftly joined on the bookshelf by The Forgotten Beasts of Eld. That first encounter set a trend, which has endured from that day to this. As recently as last year, I posted (again) on rereading The Riddlemaster of Hed - which was the very first Patricia McKillip novel I encountered. ![]() She wrote many books, so some are very old friends now. My love and enthusiasm for Patricia McKillip’s work has always centered on her “gorgeous words”, sympathetic and identifiable characters, and the wonder and delight of the worlds created with each new story. Whenever I get asked about writers I admire, Patricia McKillip is always on the list - and what we love, as I know I’ve said here before, we generally aspire to emulate. What I would like to celebrate today is how much I love her work and the extent of her writing’s influence on my own. LocusMag has an obituary, here, that charts her literary contribution, and OregonLive also features her career, here. I have learned with great sadness of the passing of renowned Fantasy author, Patricia McKillip, on May 6. ![]()

![]() ![]() I’ve mentioned in my review of Abaddon’s Gate and Cibola Burn that I had some issue with the choices of new POV characters. The average ratings speak for itself already all of these characters are the majority of The Expanse reader’s favorite characters in the series, and of course, Nemesis Games automatically became one of the highest rated books within the series because of this. Look, I can’t tell you how pleased I am by Corey’s decision to put all of these characters in one volume. I mean, with that kind of attitude, it’s not a surprise that Holden and the crew of Rocinante always get in trouble. That really is how you go through life, isn't it?” And to make things even better, Fred, Bobbie, and Avasarala (Yesss!!!) have more spotlight here, and my god, this book/series is seriously so much better for it. Let me repeat that, Holden, Naomi, Alex, and Amos have their own POV chapters. But get this, for the first time in the series, we finally have an entire book with POV chapters told exclusively through the eyes of these four characters. Corey, once again put Holden, Naomi, Alex, and Amos in a tough spot. ![]() Nemesis Games, the fifth volume in The Expanse series by James S.A. I’m not completely sure about the character development and some characters can come over as a bit whiney, but the new plot with the carnaval elements is without doubt excellent. It basically has everything I look for in a YA paranormal/horror read: almost no romance, a fast pace, well written, interesting plot and lots of creepy scenes. While I don’t think it’s actually as good as the first book, it was still without doubt a solid sequel. I’m regretting this now, because I really enjoyed reading Sanctum. But other books got in the way, and somehow I soon completely forgot how good this series actually was. I actually read the first book Asylum back in 2015 and I remember planning to read the sequel soon after that. ![]() “Dan wasn’t sure which was worse – the idea that he was actually being haunted or possessed or whatever, or the idea that this was all in his head.”
